The Campania region faces the Tyrrhenian Sea on its western side and the
Apennines mountain range on the eastern side. In front of Naples and Salerno
gulfs are the beautiful islands of Capri & Ischia.
Naples is the region capital and other important cities include Caserta,
Benevento, Avellino, Salerno and Pompeii.
Campania is extraordinarily rich with the remains of the classic antiquity
that can be found in Herculaneum, Pompeii, Paestum and Cuma. Amphitheaters,
triumphal arches, villas, bridges and tombs of the Roman Imperial Age are
numerous and remarkable. Architectural example of the Longobard Era can be
found in Capua and Benevento. Cathedrals in the Byzantine and Arab-Norman
styles are numerous and outstanding. The Royal Palace of Caserta is the most
striking expression of Baroque.
