IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF SAINT & WARRIORS - UMBRIA WALKING TOUR

Known as the "green heart of Italy," Umbria provides an ideal setting for a walking tour. Its gentle hills and mountains, broad valleys, lush olive groves and vineyards, ancient hill towns, and farmlands are networked with rural roads and walking paths.

Historically, these trails and pathways have been traveled by Romans, invading armies, crusaders, and Francis of Assisi. The itinerary includes three of the major regional parks in Umbria.

Stops at country inns along the route allow hikers to feast on local specialties. Umbria is noted for producing salami and prosciutto, truffles, and porcini mushrooms. Rustic, home cooking is complemented by locally produced wines. One tradition dish, Farro, has been known since Etruscan times and is now making its way onto menus in restaurants around the world.

Nando, a champion truffle hunter and trainer of truffle-hunting dogs, will masterfully prepare dishes featuring this gourmet delight for our group. The tour includes Sentiero del Sagrantino (Path of the Sagrantino wines), a small DOC wine area in the hills around the medieval town of Montefalco.

The trails on this program offer a variety of challenges for intermediate and expert hikers. Accommodations will be in carefully selected country inns and villas.
